The view on the way to the Navajo Reservation The day before our planned trip out to the Navajo Nation, I suffered from the worst, painfullest, evilest toothache ever! The intensity was so bad I went to the ER since no dental office was open late on the day after Thanksgiving. Kim, the daughter of my dad's lady friend, identified a potential dentist open the next morning, but armed with a bottle of vicodin, I opted to return to The Res.

The view while going to The Res is quite different from any view back home in Washington, DC. We descend from Flagstaff, Arizona, sitting 7,000 feet above sea level to a desert still 5,000 feet in the air. The peaks surround you until you break out to the desert and the land gets barren though there are still peaks in the distance. You're surrounded by trees & forests and then you're exposed in the open along a lonely highway leading you directly into the horizon. This isn't the desert you see in Hollywood. No cacti waving as you pass by. Just simple plantlife, no taller than your knees, and a lot of rocks.

The view on the way to the Navajo Reservation The trip can be further complicated if you get stuck behind a law-abiding citizen actually going the speed limit when there's only one lane. Even more so if you're traveling alone since cellular service is fickle with which service providers get a signal [I got no service]. Luckily, I was traveling five deep, and my toothache was arguing its case of why I should've been at the dentist.

But after another round of vicodin, I just sat back to the tunes of my dad's iPod, aptly playing the blues from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Johnny Winters to several others he's going to burn on a CD for me later. But until we got back to Flagstaff, it was off to The Res.
