Laced!

It may not be Sacred Art Saturdays, but if Bobby Cato is promoting it, it’s gonna be live! Come check out Pete Rock at 7:00 pm – until this Thursday at Cue Bar, located at 1115 U Street NW in Washington DC.

It’s going to be the old school. It’s going to be the ’80s. It’s going to be a throwback to the golden era. Play some pool, some ping pong and check out the art on sale by Aniekan Udofia.

Initially I was thinking METRO just raised the fares and now they’re buying thousands of LCD and plasma TVs? But then I read they’ll be earning “an estimated $16 million to $178 million over the life of the 10-year license” from advertisers on these screens.

I can dig that.

Apparently it’s not finalized, but this is one idea that I think is a good idea, assuming they don’t have audio coming out of the screens. I almost have memorized the “See it, say it…” and “Is that your bag?” PSAs blaring out the intercom system.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious FiveThe other day Torrie and I took a stroll through the National Museum of Art. Afterwards, I confessed that I’m just not into paintings of 16th century Europeans. Though some of the pieces were interesting, it was more so because of the painting techniques or the realism in the paintings. I still couldn’t really relate to many of the artists, the stories they were telling nor the people in the paintings. The only black person we saw was holding an umbrella for some woman and it wasn’t Rihanna.

But at the National Portrait Gallery, the one across the street from the Verizon Center, just opened a new exhibit called “RECOGNIZE!” which tells the story of hip hop.

Metro bus shieldWhen I first read about the new liquor store style command centers for Metro bus drivers, I was thinking how much of a good idea it was to protect the drivers. They can be the rudest, the most ignorant and most inconsiderate people you’ll ever meet.

Sure you’ll meet a handful who actually are pleasant, will answer your questions or let you know when you’re on the wrong route, but my personal experiences have been the opposite. Sometimes you have a question to ask but don’t want to interrupt their phone conversation, which continues while the bus is moving. Most of the time if I have a question, it’s a request to let me know when we’re at a specific street so I’ll know when to get off. And most of the time, I’ll ride to the end of the route or get off too early because the bus driver simply doesn’t pay any attention to my request.

Perhaps I could study road maps and memorize the turns and identify landmarks and figure it out before I get to the bus stop, but is it that much to ask the person who travels the same streets dozens of times a day for some help?

Politics is an amazing thing. It’s one of those arenas where every single word you say counts. “I did not have sexual relationships with…” is a classic. So is, “B!tch set me up…”

Speaking of Marion Barry, who’s in the latest Chuck Brown video, he has been pushing for building a soccer stadium at Poplar Point — something the residents of Ward 8 want; the owners of DC United want; something even I want, and I’m not into soccer like that. But Fenty has spoken again and it’s not sounding too promising.

DC Elections Results
Click map for more details.

Just as Mayor Adrian Fenty swept all the precincts in DC a couple of years ago, presidential candidate Barack Obama also won 100% of the precincts. According to DCist, where I first found the map:

Though the map may appear as if Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) did well in many Northwest neighborhoods, she only managed to keep Obama under 60 percent of the vote in ten precincts. Her strongest showing was Precinct 3, the neighborhood including the Watergate, some G.W. housing, and the Foggy Bottom Historic District; but she still lost to Obama in a 275-243 vote.

Obama even won 100% of the vote in Precinct 97, though the DCist says it was reported that there were only 10 votes.

During a recent trip to New York, I was amazed at the vastness of the subway system. It takes you virtually anywhere you could possibly want to go in New York. You have many options to get to the same point. And it’s a system that was built decades before technology made mass transit what it is today.

Granted there’s no elevators and escalators, that I saw anyway, and it’s a dingy, dirty, rat-crawling dungeon, but it works and works well. I returned to DC and took a look at the Metro system map and it all fo the sudden looked so elementary.

While speaking in Alexandria, VA, the other day, Barack Obama was asked why someone should vote for him instead of Clinton:

Tomorrow is the day DC, Virginia and Maryland voters go to the polls to vote for whom they want to see on the presidential tickets.

GWUAs the development in Washington DC shows no clue of a real estate slowdown across the country, George Washington University finalizes its plans for an area known as Square 54.

The 842,000-square-foot project has been in planning for some time now, settling on a deal with Boston Properties to build several high-rises featuring office, retail and residential space, in addition to a new supermarket and 1,000 parking spaces.

Not everyone is happy with the new development, though. Critics feel the new development is only going to add more chaos to an area already drowning under the weight of too much traffic, people and crowdedness.

Chinese New Year ParadeNow that we’ve completely recovered from our new year’s celebration, we move on to the next one. This Sunday February 10 in Chinatown, we celebrate the Chinese New Year with a parade, kung fu fighting, musical performances and other stuff to bring in the Year of the Rat. Beginning at 2:00 pm on H Street NW between 6th and 8th street will be the parade. Be sure to wear red when you go, a tradition meant to ward off evil spirits.

The Wiz

This year, the young aspiring artists at The Duke Ellington School of the Arts, together with an outside professional creative team, will perform the 1975 Broadway musical, The Wiz. Along with other musicals like Purlie (1971) and Raisin (1974), The Wiz was a breakthrough for Broadway, a large-scale big-budget musical featuring an all-black cast. It laid the foundation for later African-American hits like Bubbling Brown Sugar, Dreamgirls, and Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies.

The Wiz is showing at The Ellington Theatre at 3500 R Street NW (Georgetown) on Feb. 7-9 and 13-15. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. February 9 has an additional show at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. You can find out more and purchase tickets by visiting the Duke Elington School of the Arts.
