I know I haven’t been watchng much TV lately, actually none at all in the last several days, but I could’ve swore the weather was starting to lighten up. It was a complete shock to me to not only see it snowing today, but sticking, accumulating and blanketing the District completely. Luckily, I had my camera, so…

Several years ago I rode with my homeboy Chad McKelvey to Denver where he was moving to live with Davita, who eventually became his wife. During our two and a half day road trip, we stopped in a few cities to break the monotony of the highway. Starting in Atlanta, we stopped by Chattanooga TN, Nashville, St. Louis and Kansas City. We spent the most time in St. Louis, taking advantage of our opportunity to visit the Arch.

While in St. Louis we were talking to some of the locals as they talked about the Arch, the Cardinals and the meat. They’re very proud of their meat. And, someone mentioned the zoo which was free. Naturally we stopped by the zoo and it still awed me that the zoo was free.

And then I moved to Washington, DC. Virtually everything is here free!

The Great Society SubwayRecently I was killing time while waiting for “The Last King in Scotland” to start at E Street Landmark Cinema. I went around the corner to Barnes & Nobles and saw a book about specifically Metro. Considering I just moved here a couple of years ago, I didn’t realize how young the Metro system was and what was involved in making it a reality.

The Great Society Subway is a book that takes the history of Metro back to its roots, explaining the debate a mass transit system (be it a lot of buses or a subway system) versus more highways. Can you imagine 6- to 8-lane highways cutting through the heart of the city?

One of the great things about Washington, DC, is the ability to hop onto the Metro, get off at one of the downtown stations and walk around as much as you want and never get too far off the beaten path. Granted, there are blocks you want to avoid, but for the most part, once you’re downtown, you are invited to walk around the city and get to where you need to go without feeling like you’re lost.

The wide sidewalks, the foot traffic, the counters for the pedestrian lights, the sidewalk-level retail weven in commercial districts and so forth make walking DC enjoyable and convenient. And someone wants to make sure it gets better.

The DC Pedestrian Plan is being designed to make walking the city more walkable. There’s even a survey good until February 9 to get our opinions about walking in the city. I’ve taken the survey, actually thinking it could be more in-depth, but it’ll do.

With all the construction going on downtown and as many sidewalks are closed off, maybe when they reopen they will be more walkable, however they can make that happen.
