Stop the Escalation
After returning from the peace environments of the National Zoo, Torrie and I participated in the, well, whatever you want to call it. The Peace March. The War Protest. The Demonstration. A Rally. There were participants mainly opposing the war, the escalation, the discrimination of Muslims, protesting Gitmo, protesting abortion, speaking out against the treatment of Palestine, Iran, you name it.

Tai Shan and Parent Panda at the National Zoo in Washington DC

Torrie and I went to the National Zoo this morning to check out the new Asian Trail and the new panda exhibit. Tai Shan, the baby panda, if you can call him that, isn’t such a baby anymore. Neither are the three new Sumatran Tiger cubs.

Adrian Fenty speaking at the 2007 Peace Walk

Just before my homeboy Mike left to go back to North Carolina, we headed out to Anacostia and joined in on the Martin Luther King Peace Walk. Though we were recovering from a weekend of partying, three nights in a row, we made the long trek, down MLK Blvd down to where Mayor Adrian Fenty was speaking.

The parade was moved some time ago to April, hoping to be able to have a parade in honor of MLK without the threat of harsh weather. The weather this day, absolutely beautiful.

Anacostia RiverFor DC to be the world class city that mayor Adrian Fenty is planning on it to be, it’s going to have to figure out what to do with the Anacostia River and figure it out quickly. Development is planned for the baks of the river now, but the cleanup efforts are a little murky.

With two new stadiums planned for the area and the development that will follow it, the river may get worse. I’m not an environmental expert, but I do know tons more trash to a ton of trash infested river is counter-productive.

I’ve been accused of being obsessed with following the homicides in my old neighborhood. I can’t help. It still amazes me that I lived in a neighborhood that was so small in size yet has so many murders. Not deaths as in car accidents, old age or residents dying overseas in Iraq. These deaths are resulting at the hands of everyday people on everyday people.

How can you read about so much violence in such an extremely small area and not figure out that it’s time to do something? I mean, the year is only 8 days old and already someone has been murdered even after the Washington Post had a huge article about it recently. And the murders all just about happen within blocks of each other.

The latest murder was described as a result of a “gun battle!” Already four people have been killed in the District this year.

SprintNextelNow that the SprintNextel honeymoon is nearly over, it’s time to get to business. They are about to begin their next wireless network called WiMax by the end of the year, and they chose two cities to debut it. Chicago and Washington DC are the chosen ones to be part of the birth of the “fourth generation” network which SprintNextel is spending $2.5 billion to $3 billion.

My main curiosity will be if they are going to be able to build the network so it works in the Metro tunnels. DC is a city in which a large percentage of daily commuters rely on the Metro. Having access to this new network underneath the city will greatly improve Sprint’s ability to market the new services.

I also wonder if any of the current phones will be able to work on the new network. I seroiusly doubt it, assuming new technollogies are coming out to support the new network. That means a lot of people are going to have to purchase new equipment and unless they wait until the new network rolls out before they upgrade their equipment, it’s going to suck for them not not to be able to enjoy the new perks without shelling out a ton of money for new equipment.

Regardless, it’s good to see companies bringing the latest and greatest to the District. Now if we can only get more wireless spots throughout the city for those of us without Sprint.

Proposed stadium east of the river for DC United and the new lacrosse teamNow that the DC government is being led by one of the baseball stadium’s most anti-supporter, it’s going to be interesting to see how mayor Adrian Fenty handles the idea of building another stadium at Poplar Point. DC is home to MLS’s DC United and is about to be home to a professional lacrosse team. RFK is feasible, but there’s nothing like having your own home. The plan is to build a 27,000-seat stadium just across the Anacostia River from where they’re building the Washington Nationals’ stadium.

It’s obvious that something needs to be developed across the river. Economic development exploded in DC under the reign of former mayor Anthony Williams, but Ward 8 has no doubtedly been neglected. Building the stadium east of the river could be a springboard for future development by giving people a reason to cross the bridges to a forgotten part of town.

Metro passenger injured in train derailmentLooks like John Catoe Jr. is going to have his hands full when he takes over Metro, if he hasn’t already. The former number two for the Los Angeles mass transit system was chosen by the board of directors to lead the agency and since the announcement, two Metro track workers were struck and killed by a Metro train, a two year project costing half a million dollars is virtually useless, and now, a train derailed yesterday, jumping the tracks at the Mount Vernon Station.

Only one passenger was reported in serious condition, 20 of the 100 or so passengers were reported to only have minor injuries. The station and a few others on the same line were shut down with no word on when they’ll be back up and running.

No Pains, No Gaines on slideshow at local bloggers forum with WashingtonPost.comI recently attended an event hosted by WashingtonPost.com with the topic of local blogs. The three-hour forum with a panel of Washington Post writers and attended by area bloggers who write about events pertaining to Washington, DC, was pretty insightful. WashingtonPost.com has some ideas they are developing to bring local blogging to their site and this was a chance for us to learn more about those plans and learn more about the blogging world.

One of the more interesting subjects was the legal aspect of blogging, as far as how protected we are for posting information that can incite legal action. But I’m not going to get into the details as far as how far the law can protect bloggers.

I was glad to finally meet Jaime of stop, blog and roll, who sent me the announcement/invitation to the event. I have to thank her for the heads up.

Soon, the Washington Post will introduce a new section on its site where visitors can search through blogs written specifically about local events such as the DCist, MetroBloggingDC, Washington Nationals’ blogs, gardening in DC, eating in DC, life in Anacostia, the events scene and so forth.

Either-or, keep an eye on the site and thank the Washington Post for getting the local bloggers more involved in what’s being said about our city.

The moment we’ve been waiting for is finally here. Adrian Fenty, DC’s rookie mayor, introduced his new vision starting with a takeover of the public school system. The 58,000-student system has been in ruins for years now and Fenty is going all in, betting his political reputation and future on turning the system around.

Obviously the school system needs some serious attention. One of the District’s most pressing issue in my opinion is the extremely high crime rate. The homicide level may have gone down recently, but let’s not pretend that it’s acceptable. One of the key factors in having such a disgraceful level of homicides and other violent crimes is the decrepit state of the school system. Anyone else watch “The Wire?”

Henry Moore sculptureAfter tending to some business downtown DC today, I decided to walk home rather than hop on the Metro. I don’t stay far from the National Mall. Heading south on 7th Street SW, I had to make a few phone calls and decided to pause for a second near The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden .

And at the corner of 7th Street SW and Independence Ave, there were these sculptures that I may have noticed before, but I never really noticed before. At first I thought there were only three of them. I snapped some photos of them, went around he corner and they were everywhere!

I peeked down to the Sculpture Garden and there were more. These abstract figures were scattered throughout the Sculpture Garden, from abstract figures of people to abstract objects of, just, abstractness.

The other day in the paper, there were some letters to incoming mayor Adrian Fenty written by residents. These letters addressed the lesser known issues around the city such as the trash which begins in the streets and ends up in the river, the abandoned buildings which invite criminal activity and the reversible lanes on Connecticut Avenue which increases the frequency of dangerous driving habits.

Obviously we all want to see something done to correct the public safety issues, the educational system issues and other key concerns, but sometimes just focusing on the smaller more manageable issues can really go a long way.

So what would I write if I wrote a letter to newly sworn in mayor Adrian Fenty? Let’s see…
