The new year is here!
It always seems just like yesterday we were just saying that, but 2006 is coming to an end, and I hope you accomplished last year’s resolutions as you prepare the new list (for some, the same list) for the new year.
And if one of your resolutions is to quit smoking, well, DC is about to make it a little easier. Beginning next Tuesday, smoking is banned in all bars, restaurants and clubs in the District.
Let’s see if the government is more affective in enforcing this ban than they are at enforcing the no firearms ban.

As I left work for the last time this year, I noticed something a little different with some of the signage. Some of the poles that direct riders to where to go to get on whichever line they’re looking for, instead of Huntington, I noticed they said Ft. Totten. I’ve read about the proposed idea of extending the Yellow Line after rush hour, but I didn’t realize it was already in motion.

When I first moved to Washington, DC, I wasn’t sure what to expect. All I heard growing up was how bad the crime is. Murders everyday. Prostitution, open-air drug markets, crooked cops, everywhere a ghetto, corruption, incompetent leadership and so on and so on.
Being the capital of the entire world, I still new I had to live here. I was going to accept it however it is/was, deciding to pour my efforts into helping make it a better place, or at least bearable enough to live in.

Just when I moved out from Carver-Langston, it seems the violence got out of control. Four homicides in just under a month, seven or more people shot since then. There was an article a few weeks ago chronicling the plight of the neighborhood. And just when I though with a little attention the neighborhood would calm down a bit, two more people were shot just around the corner from my old place.

I’m not exactly sure how this happened, but the thought of the two year half million dollar project at the Metro Friendship Heights station behind a failure is mind-blowing. Not so much because no one used the station; it’s being heavily used. Not because it was aesthetically ugly or over-budget or behind schedule or anything that was uncontrollable.

Just when I moved out from the old neighborhood, apparently all hell broke out. When I moved back to Washington, DC, $750 a month sounded like a deal. And since it was down the right from H Street which is being revitalized, within site of the U.S. Capitol Building and around the corner from the National Arboretum, I figured I was safe.
DC has its good parts and bunch more bad parts. I should’ve done more research, but I figured why not give it a shot? All that talk about crime can only be but so bad, right?
So, Torrie and I got a place in Carver-Langston and to our surprise, we moved right into a war zone.
