It was built the year when John F. Kennedy took office. It was to help get around 70,000 commuters across the Potomac River conveniently. It is getting closer and closer to an Extreme Makeover.
The Woodrow Wilson Bridge has served its purpose, serving almost three times the original daily capacity, and is still transitioning to the new bridge. This weekend there will only be one southbound lane to go along with the three northbound lanes already using the new bridge.
Due September 2008 is another span to the bridge that will allow four general use lanes in both directions. And since the drawbridges are 20 feet higher than the old drawbridge, there will fewer traffic stoppers due to passing boats and ships.
