Politics is an amazing thing. It’s one of those arenas where every single word you say counts. “I did not have sexual relationships with…” is a classic. So is, “B!tch set me up…”

Speaking of Marion Barry, who’s in the latest Chuck Brown video, he has been pushing for building a soccer stadium at Poplar Point — something the residents of Ward 8 want; the owners of DC United want; something even I want, and I’m not into soccer like that. But Fenty has spoken again and it’s not sounding too promising.

GWUAs the development in Washington DC shows no clue of a real estate slowdown across the country, George Washington University finalizes its plans for an area known as Square 54.

The 842,000-square-foot project has been in planning for some time now, settling on a deal with Boston Properties to build several high-rises featuring office, retail and residential space, in addition to a new supermarket and 1,000 parking spaces.

Not everyone is happy with the new development, though. Critics feel the new development is only going to add more chaos to an area already drowning under the weight of too much traffic, people and crowdedness.

Anacostia RiverFor DC to be the world class city that mayor Adrian Fenty is planning on it to be, it’s going to have to figure out what to do with the Anacostia River and figure it out quickly. Development is planned for the baks of the river now, but the cleanup efforts are a little murky.

With two new stadiums planned for the area and the development that will follow it, the river may get worse. I’m not an environmental expert, but I do know tons more trash to a ton of trash infested river is counter-productive.

Proposed stadium east of the river for DC United and the new lacrosse teamNow that the DC government is being led by one of the baseball stadium’s most anti-supporter, it’s going to be interesting to see how mayor Adrian Fenty handles the idea of building another stadium at Poplar Point. DC is home to MLS’s DC United and is about to be home to a professional lacrosse team. RFK is feasible, but there’s nothing like having your own home. The plan is to build a 27,000-seat stadium just across the Anacostia River from where they’re building the Washington Nationals’ stadium.

It’s obvious that something needs to be developed across the river. Economic development exploded in DC under the reign of former mayor Anthony Williams, but Ward 8 has no doubtedly been neglected. Building the stadium east of the river could be a springboard for future development by giving people a reason to cross the bridges to a forgotten part of town.

Waterside Mall in Southwest DC
Looks like SW DC is about to get a little busy in the next several years. There’s a ton of stuff going on because of the new stadium. There’s the $800 million development project proposed for the waterfront. And then there’s the badly-needed renovation of Waterside Mall.

I live directly across the street from the mall, and it’s a huge complex with nothing in it. There’s a CVS and a dry cleaners, a Safeway, a Metro stop and a lot of emptiness. There has been different ideas and concerns of what to expect once the renovation is done. I’m only hoping, assuming I’m still living in the area when they’re done, that the Safeway doesn’t get moved down the street. For whatever that’s worth.

Florida Rock rendering in Near SoutheastEver since I moved to Washington, DC, I fell in love with it. I’m still in awe whenever I’m out and about. The people. The power. The history. I have mno plans to ever move away from the city I’ve started planting roots in.

But there’s one thing about Washington, DC, that I find absolutely discouraging. Trying to find a decent place to live without sacrificing three meals a day or having to dodge bullets walking to the store.

DC USA in Columbia Heights

When I lived in Atlanta, the majority of my friends lived in a city that was not Atlanta. Marietta, Norcross, Douglasville, East Point, Roswell, Stone Mountain, Kennesaw, Smyrna, Austell, Jonesboro, Lithonia, Lithia Springs and so forth. When I moved to Washington, DC, I assumed everyone who lived in the District simply lived in the District. Rarely in Atlanta did I ask someone where they lived and they responded with the name of their neighborhood. In DC people take pride in their neighborhoods as if the neighborhood is a little city in itself. Capitol Hill, Brookland, Columbia Heights, Georgetown, Cleveland Park, Anacostia, Mount Pleasant, Adams Morgan and on and on.

DC United Just as the dust begins to settle from the Washington Nationals’ stadium battle royal, looks like another stadium is headed to Washington, DC, in the Anacostia area. Only this one probably won’t have the hoopla involved.

Kevin Payne, owner of D.C. United soccer team is expecting to move out of RFK Memorial Stadium and into their new digs in the Anacostia area, south of the new Nationals stadium, by 2008 or 2009. The Washington Business Journal recently interviewed Kevin Payne about DC United, his road to bringing a team to the District and his future plans.
