When my family was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany, there was only one English-speaking channel for us to watch. And it was produced by the military at that. No advertisement was allowed other than a ton of PSAs and community announcements.

One of the PSAs would always encourage the military families to conserve energy. There was the energy rapper who rapped about turning off the lights when we left a room. It worked, well, for me. I may not always turn off my laptop when I step away, but I definitely don’t leave the lights on in a room that I’m not in.

In anacostia stands the Big Chair. Marietta Georgia has the Big Chicken. Across the country there’s a bunch of big stuff. And in Australia, there’s the Big Boot. As part of the DC Environmental Film Festival, you can learn the story of this huge Wellington boot built to attract tourists in a small town called Tully.

The Embassy of Australia is showing the film “Big Dreamers” for free [RSVP required by calling (202) 797-3025] 6:30 pm tomorrow, March 18 at 1601 Massachusetts Ave NW near the Dupont Circle Metro station.

The first time I went to see a film for the DC Environmental Film Festival, it was “March of the Penguins, a film I’ve been recommending to everyone who’ll listen. Now the creators bring us “Arctic Tale,” a story based on the other side of the Earth about a polar bear and a walrus growing up in a world which is changing rapidly presenting challenges that generations before didn’t have to overcome to survive.

Laced!

It may not be Sacred Art Saturdays, but if Bobby Cato is promoting it, it’s gonna be live! Come check out Pete Rock at 7:00 pm – until this Thursday at Cue Bar, located at 1115 U Street NW in Washington DC.

It’s going to be the old school. It’s going to be the ’80s. It’s going to be a throwback to the golden era. Play some pool, some ping pong and check out the art on sale by Aniekan Udofia.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious FiveThe other day Torrie and I took a stroll through the National Museum of Art. Afterwards, I confessed that I’m just not into paintings of 16th century Europeans. Though some of the pieces were interesting, it was more so because of the painting techniques or the realism in the paintings. I still couldn’t really relate to many of the artists, the stories they were telling nor the people in the paintings. The only black person we saw was holding an umbrella for some woman and it wasn’t Rihanna.

But at the National Portrait Gallery, the one across the street from the Verizon Center, just opened a new exhibit called “RECOGNIZE!” which tells the story of hip hop.

Chinese New Year ParadeNow that we’ve completely recovered from our new year’s celebration, we move on to the next one. This Sunday February 10 in Chinatown, we celebrate the Chinese New Year with a parade, kung fu fighting, musical performances and other stuff to bring in the Year of the Rat. Beginning at 2:00 pm on H Street NW between 6th and 8th street will be the parade. Be sure to wear red when you go, a tradition meant to ward off evil spirits.

The Wiz

This year, the young aspiring artists at The Duke Ellington School of the Arts, together with an outside professional creative team, will perform the 1975 Broadway musical, The Wiz. Along with other musicals like Purlie (1971) and Raisin (1974), The Wiz was a breakthrough for Broadway, a large-scale big-budget musical featuring an all-black cast. It laid the foundation for later African-American hits like Bubbling Brown Sugar, Dreamgirls, and Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies.

The Wiz is showing at The Ellington Theatre at 3500 R Street NW (Georgetown) on Feb. 7-9 and 13-15. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. February 9 has an additional show at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. You can find out more and purchase tickets by visiting the Duke Elington School of the Arts.

Vincent OrangeVincent Orange celebrated his 50th birthday [I’m sure it was number 50, but it was an open bar] this weekend, and he did it in style. On the top level of Love the Club, Orange was greeted by hundreds, honored by dozens, given awards and best wishes and went on to have a good time.

Of course the place was decked out in Orange. He spoke for a minute to the crowd and talked a bit about his new role at Pepco [Pepco, right?]. He spoke about the salary, the company car and the fact that he doesn’t have to deal with all the drama gong on in DC government as he spoke.

Council Chairperson Vincent Gray shared some words as well as some other luminaries.

Bag Pipers at the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Washington DC

It seems like if I don’t make any other parade, I always find a way to make it to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Of course this year it’s a week earlier than it should be. Probably because of the Peace March coming up, the march to the Pentagon, next weekend. Well, the quiet before the storm is being filled with bagpipes this weekend.

Adrian Fenty speaking at the 2007 Peace Walk

Just before my homeboy Mike left to go back to North Carolina, we headed out to Anacostia and joined in on the Martin Luther King Peace Walk. Though we were recovering from a weekend of partying, three nights in a row, we made the long trek, down MLK Blvd down to where Mayor Adrian Fenty was speaking.

The parade was moved some time ago to April, hoping to be able to have a parade in honor of MLK without the threat of harsh weather. The weather this day, absolutely beautiful.

George Bush speaking at the Air Force Memorial DedicationA couple of weeks ago, I spent the day on the grounds of the Pentagon for the dedication of the new Air Force Memorial. There were some aircraft on display including an F-15 Fighter jet, a Predator, Global Hawk, a few other aircraft like the MH-53 and CV-22 and a mock up F-35.

There were several speakers including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and President George Bush, neither of whom I was expecting. Another part of the dedication was an air parade in which aircraft from the past and present flew overheard, including B1 (or was it a B2?) Stealth Bomber and its distinctive triangular shape and the Thunderbirds.

The Pact the MovieA gritty, provocative true-life story of three friends from the ‘hood, Rameck Hunt, Sampson Davis, and George Jenkins, who made a pact in high school to find a way to go to college and then medical school. They not only accomplished this, but they’re now spreading the word to inspire other inner-city kids to stay off of drugs, out of gangs and to take the educational route to a better life.

The Pact captures the pathos of the men’s individual journeys, the integrity of their voices and the power of their rare friendship. Their stories affirm the values that ultimately sustained and drove them: courage, tenacity, and faith. And they give tribute to the life of the mind and its power to turn dreams into reality.

This documentary will be aired August 24 at the Landmark E Street Theater.

DC Shorts Film FestivalLooking for a reason to go to the movies other than Snakes on a Plane? Me, too. With a little patience, there’ll be 94 options, but you won’t be inundated with advertisements to watch them. Next month is the third annual DC Shorts Film Festival, and the range of films are all across the board.

Of the 94 shorts chosen from 495 entries, 74 films are from 18 countries from France and India to Macau and United Arab Emirates. This year’s main screenings will be held at Landmark E Street Cinema (near Metro Center Station), as well as two special showcases of Canadian films at the Canadian Embassy (near Judiciary Square/Archives Metro Station). And just so you know, a third of the films are from local (DC-based) filmmakers.

The event is being held September 14-21. View the General Information Press Release or the Highlights of the Festival Press Release for more information.
