Politics is an amazing thing. It’s one of those arenas where every single word you say counts. “I did not have sexual relationships with…” is a classic. So is, “B!tch set me up…”

Speaking of Marion Barry, who’s in the latest Chuck Brown video, he has been pushing for building a soccer stadium at Poplar Point — something the residents of Ward 8 want; the owners of DC United want; something even I want, and I’m not into soccer like that. But Fenty has spoken again and it’s not sounding too promising.

Proposed stadium east of the river for DC United and the new lacrosse teamNow that the DC government is being led by one of the baseball stadium’s most anti-supporter, it’s going to be interesting to see how mayor Adrian Fenty handles the idea of building another stadium at Poplar Point. DC is home to MLS’s DC United and is about to be home to a professional lacrosse team. RFK is feasible, but there’s nothing like having your own home. The plan is to build a 27,000-seat stadium just across the Anacostia River from where they’re building the Washington Nationals’ stadium.

It’s obvious that something needs to be developed across the river. Economic development exploded in DC under the reign of former mayor Anthony Williams, but Ward 8 has no doubtedly been neglected. Building the stadium east of the river could be a springboard for future development by giving people a reason to cross the bridges to a forgotten part of town.
