Ginnie CooperThree months and some weeks into her new job, Ginnie Cooper is bringing some much needed attention to Washington DC’s library system. The new executive director of the DC library system took a $13,000 pay cut from her Brooklyn, NY, library director position to lead DC’s shameful library system. And it’s going to take some work.

DC Public LibrariesThere’s only about a week to go before the Democratic primaries. The race has pretty much come down to Adrian Fenty and Linda Cropp, but I’m sure there are still a lot of undecideds out there still trying to figure out who to give their vote.

I was looking up some stuff online and came across a survey given to the candidates (mayoral candidates and other races) about the DC Public Libraries by the Federation of Friends of the DC Public Libraries. The libraries in Washington, DC, definitely aren’t what I consider world class, and electing a mayor who’ll actually do something about it is imperative to me. We recently welcomed Ginny Cooper, the new Executive Director of DC Public Libraries. Her arrival with a new mayor should bring fresh ideas and some kinetic energy to a neglected system.

Speaking of the libraries, one of the things I really was looking forward to is happening already. By mid-September all the neighborhood branches and all of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library will have wireless Internet access for anyone who has a laptop configured for wireless connection (in other words, a wireless Internet card). From Federation of Friends of the DC Public Library:

Wi-Fi Installation Project: We tested it at Georgetown. A couple of places in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library are “hot spots.” Now it’s time to make all of the D.C. Public Library Wi-Fi! Beginning next week and extending through mid-September, all branches and all of Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library will be brought online as wireless access hot spots. That means anyone with a laptop computer that is configured for Wi-Fi can walk into one of our libraries and log on without using a public access computer. It’s great news for DCPL and even better news for our customers. Once the installation is complete we will broadcast the news of our Wi-Fi availability to the entire Metro area. Signs and brochures for the public will come as Wi-Fi access is installed. Watch as we take yet another step toward being the library our public needs!

Every now and again I’ll have a conversation with people about the crime happening in Washington, DC. And to my amazement, just about everyone tends to respond with the same with of thinking. When hearing about the millions of dollars spent on police officers and removing abandoned cars, people generally say that money needs to be spent on the next generation.

Apparently you don’t have to be a politician to figure it out. If you really want to reduce crime, give the youth today something to do so they don’t get sucked up into a life of crime. Sure, the curfew may prevent them from becoming victims or roaming the streets looking for trouble, but it still doesn’t solve the problem of preventing them from eventually having nothing better to do but enter into the world of criminal activity.

I found this link from Inside the DC Bubble Blog which details the approval to the fiscal year 2007 District of Columbia spending bill from the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations. One of the issues about Washington, DC, that I focus on is its absolute lack of a library system.

I mean, I know one exists, but my experiences with the libraries have been extremely disappointing. Specifically the landmark library in Gallery Place. I promise you stepping into the men’s bathroom is like stepping into a homeless shelter. There are men in there sleeping in the stalls with all their belongings.

When I was attending Ponderosa Elementary School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, one of the highlights of the week was going to the library. We only had a few hours, but to scour the bookshelves for a good book was like being on a scavenger hunt. I found myself always gravitating towards the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown books. Now that I’m an adult, going to the library just isn’t the same. It’s a mystery to me how a city led by intellectuals can have such a decaying library system.
