Ever since I moved to Washington, DC, I have since day one fell in love with the city. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. All I knew was that there were a lot of powerful people here, you can function effectively and efficiently without a car (sometimes even better without a car), and the Redskins play here.

When I got here, the first thing I noticed was that it’s not just one city. DC is several cities stacked on top of each other. There’s the internationally known city, the epicenter of power, the banker of world currencies and economies, the overseer of all conflicts to some degree, the land of the free and the land of the bullies. Nationally, it’s viewed in a different light. DC is a crime capital. DC has the most confusing streets and is one of the most difficult to navigate. DC has no night life. DC is superficial, saturated with social status strivers and it’s a city confused whether or not it’s a northern or southern city.

It seems like every morning when I set out for work, I find myself hustling down the street, crossing the street (along with everyone else) though the sign says “do not walk,” dodging the campaigners passing out flyers, flying down the escalator, zipping through the faregates, racing down another set of escalators or stairs just to get to the platform for the sign to say the next train doesn’t come for nine minutes.

Metro is helping eliminate that problem by allowing everyone to see when the next train will arrive in the station via the Metro website or even your mobile devices. ‘Bout time!

All you do is visit the Metro station’s individual page and clicking on the “Next Train Arrival” link. It automatically refreshes every 30 seconds so no need to worry too much about Internet drag.

The MPD unveiled a new website that has completely impressed me. Ever since moving here, I’ve been amazed at the amount of crime that happens. The Washington Post had an article a few Sundays ago about the amount of robberies that occur right in the heart of the city. In the entertainment and trendy parts of town.

I was just about to move to an area in Columbia Heights that had just witnessed a murder around 14th and Girard Street NW before settling for Waterfront, right around the corner from where a couple of murders happened not too long ago where they’re building the new baseball stadium.

The new feature on MPD’s site is a map that will list crimes that happened right around the corner from any address you enter. It’s pretty interesting and extremely easy to navigate and understand. If you see a little body lying in the street, that means a homicide happened right there.

Check out the new site and the article in the Washington Post about it.

Visit GasBuddy.com and enter your ZIP code to find the best priced gas in your area. I’m a Metro rider, so this link does me no good. Hopefully it helps you save a few pennies.

All I’m trying to say is you never know when not knowing could cost you your life. The Metro Police Department had a link on its site that I feel everyone who lives in the District needs to know about. It’s a free service for those who want to know what’s going on around their pad. I definitely wanna know, especially what I just recently found out about my neighborhood.
