Sometimes as a fan we tend to get caught up in the office politics. Who wants more money than they're worth; who should've been acquired and who should've been left on the wire; who said this and who said that. I'm guilty of it. But ultimately, we all want the same thing, as fans. We want to bring home another Lombardi Trophy.
At first I was a bit annoyed by Shawn Springs not wanting to take one for the team and take a salary cut, considering his injuries, age and anything else to justify why he should be the one to bite the bullet. If anything else it's because his dad was a Cowboy.
But then I started thinking. The June 1 cuts were made and the Redskins didn't dump him. And now
he's finally at camp and already our secondary is looking much more formidable than last year. So — what if our secondary went from last year's disappointment to Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot manning the corners with Sean Taylor and LaRon Landry blistering anyone who comes their way? I can dig that.
And then
we added David Macklin (he's aight and should be able to handle a number three or four) at corner to join Ade Jimoh who has been with us for a minute. And supporting Taylor and Landry is Vernon Fox (who impressed me last year, relative to what I was expecting) and Pierson Prioleau is back after last year's injury. And if somehow we can figure out what to do with Reed Doughty.
One of the weaknesses last year at the corners has been lack of depth and if nothing else, if a team doesn't want to throw towards Springs (when he's healthy) or Rogers (which they weren't too afraid too at tiem last year), all they had to do was toss the rock to the slot receiver. I'm sure Smoot can hold down a number three receiver. If we can get man up on receivers X, Y and Z, just imagine what the two headknockers can do back there?
Of course our line is going to have to step up, but with the X, Y and Z being covered, they'll have an extra split second or two to make that move and put some pressure on the QB. Golston looked good to me considering he came from nowhere. And if we can get the line healthy, we'll be right back where we were before last year and that was dominating opposing offenses.
Either-or, as we get closer to the season opener and after a few preseason games, we'll see how this combination plays out. I'm just glad to see Springs is finally at the Park. ANd regardless of whether or not he deserves the contract both parties agreed to, I hope he sticks around long enough to help turn this ship around.
