Well, in the first half, there was a glimmer of hope that the Redskins came to play. By the end of the third quarter, Peyton Manning got his marbles back in order and reality settled into the dome as Indianapolis went on to spank the Redskins 36-22. And it wasn't even that close.
The secondary gave up 342 yards of passing and four TDs. Reggie Wayne had a 51-yarder. Marvin Harrison had a 38-yarder. Dallas Clark had a 40-yarder. Ben Utecht had a 21-yarder. Joseph Addai had a 20-yarder. Rookie Joseph Addai also had 85 yards rushing on only 11 carries, averaging 7.7 yards. The defense had no sacks and no interceptions, though they did almost successfully knock Peyton Manning out of the game for a play.
He called timeout, came back and ripped it up in the second half.
How about our offense? Portis got banged up throughout the game. Antwaan Randle El and Santana Moss both game up a little gimpy. Mark Brunell had a little limp after one play. Brunell actually had a good game for the most part completing 27 of 37 for 226 yards and two TDs. How did they do with my idea of running the ball almost every play? They called 37 passing plays to only 24 running plays, but that's what happens when you fall behind my multiple scores to a team like Indy.
Nick Novak missed both his FGs and Derrick Frost only averaged 38.5 yards a punt and was penalized for taking off his helmet in protest of who-knows-what. On the other side, Adam Vinateri went 3 for 3 in FGs and Hunter Smith averaged 47 yards a punt (and one ugly missed tackle).
The Redskins were also penalized 10 times for 91 yards. Some of the calls like Marcus Washington's roughing the passer call were a bit of a stretch. But Santana Moss' unsportsmanlike conduct and Antwaan Randle El's celebration penalties were simply preventable (As well as Frost's penalty previous mentioned. Does anyone know what he was pissed about? Anyone?).
There were some good things that happened. Chris Cooley looked good.
Ok, back to reality. The Redskins are now 2-5 heading into a bye week in which Dallas, Tampa and Philly are waiting for them on the other side. Have I given up? Nope. The Giants, Cowboys and the Eagles all have grueling schedules coming up as well, including their games against Washington. During the next two weeks, Al Saunders and crew must figure out how to use all those weapons. And Gregg Williams must put some swagger back in the defense. We'll see what happens during the break.
