Sheep for Dinner

While visiting my dad in Arizona, we went out to the Navajo Nation where the family of his girlfriend lives out on the reservation. They were celebrating a little girl's first birthday and dinner was going to be sheep. And I don't mean lamb chops from your local Pakistani restaurant.

In the photos to the left, Lamont brought out the main course, while it was still breathing, and Sylvester helped him tie the legs together. They threw the sheep in the back of the truck and off we go to the cutting board.

At first I was pretty skeptical that slaughter this animal was going to be quick, easy and humane. It's funny how when we buy meat from the grocery store how easily we forget that not only was that animal alive at some point, but someone had to take its life because cows and pigs don't volunteer to jump into the frying pan.

While the sheep patiently waiting on the back of the truck, they were digging a hole in the ground. When the nexk is slit, the hole is where the blood runs off into, the blood that doesn't make it into the bowl that will later be used for "blood sausages."

By the way, they did slaughter this sheep so if blood makes you queasy, you may wanna stick to my Grand Canyon photos. Otherwise, put on an apron, grab a fork and click right here.
