National Math Festival

Saturday, April 22 @ 10:00 am - 7:00 pm

Free

The National Math Festival brings together some of the most influential mathematicians of our time to inspire and challenge participants to see math in new and exciting ways. Through a day of lectures, hands-on demonstrations, art, films, performances, puzzles, games, children’s book readings, and more, we bring out unexpected sides of mathematics for everyone, from toddlers to adults of all ages.

The National Math Festival is free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C. Join us, or celebrate wherever you are with events at dozens of science museums around the U.S. and More Math! games and resources online!

Immerse yourself in the playful side of math!

At the National Math Festival, you’ll get a glimpse of some of the many ways in which math patterns your life. Learn how big math can get, from the power of symmetry in shaping the universe to the outer reaches of black holes—then zero in on your own life, from the mathematics of eyesight to the DNA in your cells! Learn about the power of hurricane storm surges and the math behind drag racing, music, and art.

“Mathematics really is on some level accessible to everybody. Mathematics truly is part of our nature—to find structure in the world is simply how our brains work. When we make a point of making it accessible to people who haven’t done high-level mathematics, I think we just bring that joy to everybody.” – Dr. Rebecca Goldin, George Mason University

Interactive Activities—More to Come!

Interactive activities for all ages abound at the National Math Festival. Come explore dozens of hands-on demos, games, and workshops, from origami to art making, and much more. There’s a whole day of fun to be had, from races and competitions to collaborative sculpture building, so arrive early to squeeze it all in!

Got your sneakers on? Race to factor in the Flagway™ games; or test your mettle with mathletic challenges in the Oobleck Olympics. Take cybersecurity into your own hands with NOVA Labs. Play along with Gracie & Friends™ in preschool math apps and activities.

Love games? We do, too! We’ll have some of the best and mathiest on-hand for you to play and explore; or bring your own to share! Prefer a little theater with your math? See if you can beat the house in Cash Prizes for Everyone! — and challenge the winning Math Dice® team from Arlington at their own game.

Tackle a truly deep, unsolved math problem with Math Pickle; see if you can find the beginning and end of a Klein bottle with Cliff Stoll; make new friends onscreen with Navajo Math Circles. Meet Brady Haran from the YouTube channel Numberphile (and see what he’s filming at the Festival!). Nab a geometric balloon sculpture to wear. Take your picture and join the We♥Math wall, too!
