Bohemian Caverns Lounge, Live Music, Jazz
2001 11th Street NW • (202) 299-0800
In 1926 a little jazz club was opened in the basement of a drugstore located at 11th
and U St. called Club Caverns. Club Caverns soon became famous for their floor and variety shows.
Washington's elite would come in droves dressed in their most formal attire, to be entertained by the likes
of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. In the 1950's Club Caverns soon became known as Crystal Caverns. The club
would operate successfully, but it would reach its zenith peak when the club became known as
Bohemian Caverns in the late 1950's to early 1960's. Best known for its great Jazz and elegant atmosphere.
In 1962 Ramsey Lewis recorded "The Ramsey Lewis Trio at the Bohemian Caverns." This recording earned accolades and
great commercial success. Mr. Lewis would shine another bright light on the corner of 11th and U St.
when he won a Grammy for his recording "The In Crowd" recorded on the LP, "The In Crowd, Live at the Bohemian
Caverns." The Caverns has brought a great many artists to its stage, but it was the immortals that built this house
and our legacy: Washington's Son Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Louis Armstrong,
Ramsey Lewis, Less McCann, Miles Davis, Shirley Horn, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Wynton Marsalis, Thelonious Monk,
Charles Mingus and even Bill Cosby.

Marvin Bar/Lounge
2007 14th St NW • (202) 797-7171
Inspired by the story of Marvin Gaye's infamous two years in self-imposed exile
in the small Belgian town of Ostend, the creators of Marvin have combined the cafe society of Belgium,
with the proud soul of Shaw. Belgian moulles-frites are served along side southern-style shrimp and grits.
The classic steak-frites and fried chicken with Belgian waffles are just two of the many top dishes created
by Chef James Claudio. Adding to the experience is a soundtrack of rare funk, soul, ska, and jazz created
by Thievery Corporation's Eric Hilton. Upstairs at Marvin you'll find one of DC's best lounges and
rooftop decks. The turntables inside the lounge are manned by a collective of friends that have been
digging for rare soul gems to create the right atmosphere. The roof deck, is heated, partially covered, and

Saloon, The
1207 U St NW • (202) 462-2640
There's a no-standing policy at the bar because The Saloon wants all its visitors
to be relaxed and comfortable as opposed to crowding around a bar like sardines. Plus there's no TV, and it's
all contrived by owner Kamal Jahanbein so that patrons can focus on conversation, imported beer and
just plain hanging out. Once a popular Georgetown destination, The Saloon moved operations over to the
U Street corridor where it could be more of a low-key spot although the atmosphere hasn't changed much.
It's still a friendly, laidback place where locals come to chat and indulge in a high-quality brew. There are
12 German beers on tap and many more available in bottles, like the Urbock 23 which has a one-per-person
limit due to its high alcohol content. The Saloon serves up all-American pub fare like burgers and buffalo
wings and adds a few specialties into the mix like their spicy red cabbage dish.
