DC Illustrated: Shrimp Boat

I haven’t gone yet, but ever since I moved here the locals have been telling me about the Shrimp Boat…

Haven’t We Seen Avatar Before?

AvatarThere’s a litany of reasons why Avatar was underwhelming to me. For beginners the stupid name for the mineral the humans were trying to get to — unobtainium? There’s something about movies with cowboys invading peaceful people acting as if brute force is the only way to deal with them. Just for one of the cowboys to be the hero for these peaceful people who couldn’t make it without one of the enemy going rogue.

Bah!

I’ll just recommend anyone who really cares to read this article my homeboy Devin emailed me about what makes the movie just a regurgitation of a tired story line with different color people. This time blue.

These are movies about white guilt. Our main white characters realize that they are complicit in a system which is destroying aliens, AKA people of color – their cultures, their habitats, and their populations. The whites realize this when they begin to assimilate into the “alien” cultures and see things from a new perspective. To purge their overwhelming sense of guilt, they switch sides, become “race traitors,” and fight against their old comrades. But then they go beyond assimilation and become leaders of the people they once oppressed. This is the essence of the white guilt fantasy, laid bare. It’s not just a wish to be absolved of the crimes whites have committed against people of color; it’s not just a wish to join the side of moral justice in battle. It’s a wish to lead people of color from the inside rather than from the (oppressive, white) outside.

Tailgating at the Redskins-Cowboys Game

David Gaines and Mike Jackson at FedEx Field for the Redskins-Cowboys game

Just as the game got started, I walked out to the lobby of FedEx Field to find a seat to get my wit back together. Southern Comfort had kept me warm as my homeboy Mike and I tailgated before the Redskins-Cowboys game, and as I walked the concourses harassing anyone wearing Cowboys colors.

But SoCo won and when I opened my eyes, the game was over, most everyone was gone and I had no idea who had won the game. But I remember before the game!

Captain Q BBQ’s Wall of International Currency

Kenyan Schilling at Texas BBQ in Gallery Place/Chinatown

Nduku and I caught up with my homeboy Chad, who was in town, and we went to Capital Q BBQ in Chinatown/Gallery Place for a quick bite before we went to see Avatar. The food was ok, the movie afterwards was underwhelming, but the wall of Capital Q BBQ was a pleasant surprise. It was covered in currency from all around the world. Money of all denominations [mostly American bills though] from all countries with all kinds of notes and messages now preserved on the walls of a BBQ joint.

Nduku added a Kenyan Schilling. Here are just a few of the hundreds that plaster the walls…

Would You Want To Date HotLikeLavaBoy?

Imagine your BFF is going to introduce you to someone who you may be interested in dating. When you ask for the name, your BFF says the person’s nickname is babeecakes69 or HotLikeLavaBoy or even RydeorDieBytch! Hey, if that’s how that person wants to be known, so be it, but what does it do to the perception of who you’re about to meet? Assuming you’re desperate enough to still be interested in meeting such a potential significant other!

The point is when recruiters are looking at resumes and the email address has one of these [or any of the thousands of other ignorant ones I've seen] names, the odds of any attempt to contacting that person is almost zilch. Seriously, your email address should be as generic as possible. Your name is the safest, in whatever form you can make it. Your nickname should be saved for your BFFs. Also, many times people use their birth year on the resume. I highly discourage it. It gives away your age and can contribute to age discrimination though you’ll never know it.

Must Visit Websites if You’re Looking for Work!

As we wait until I get back in the game, there are some websites I’ve checked out [from a Sunday Washington Post article] with some really good advice for anyone looking for work. As you read the advice I have to reiterate that there is no more right way to do a resume.

Sort of like beauty, how good a resume looks is in the eye of the beholder. Only with resumes, the effectiveness is actually in the eyes of the one person looking at it at that moment. Some HR directors won’t look past the first page and recommend single-page resumes. Others prefer more details to develop a story line of your career. Some like bullet points, other paragraphs and compete sentences. At the end of the day, just make sure your resume says you are aptly [as opposed to overly qualified] qualified for the specific position in which you’re applying at that moment.

How To Stay Atop Resume Search Results

This is a simple technique that I may have mentioned before, but in light of me now finding myself in the position of looking for work, I realize just how important and effective this very simple tip [literally three minutes a week!] is in ensuring you get constant looks at your resume when posted on job boards.

When recruiters and HR directors are searching for resumes on job boards such as CareerBuilder and Monster, the process is essentially just like using Google. Only there’s one little additional variable the job boards use that I’m not sure if Google uses, and that’s the last modified date. When recruiters do a search for — let’s say a project manager with non-profit experience — they’ll receive hundreds of results of hundreds of potential candidates. But keep in mind that recruiters aren’t going to look at every single one of those hundreds of resumes that come up. There are other tips to get them to look at your resume that I’ll discuss in a later post, but this one is an easy and essential start to improving the odds your resume gets a look.

Celebrating the Holidays With Travisa

Jan of Travisa at the holiday party
Jan at the Travisa holiday party.

I’ve heard all about them, but tonight I got to meet Nduku’s co-workers at the Travisa holiday party. Jan, the boss, was having an extra good time, one of the more animated business leaders I’ve ever seen. Of course the gift he got, Vodka in a bottle shaped like an AK-47, would get anyone into the holiday spirit.

Get Discounts and a Dollar is Donated

What's the DealIt seems every day there’s something going on in Washington, DC, and always a special deal to take advantage of. But finding those deals sometimes is hit or miss. How many times have I heard about a special the day after the deadline to get it!? Now you can get an email every day [or two] with the deal of the day and by signing up for free to receive the specials, a dollar will be donated to one of three charities.

The way What’s the Deal works is they go out and negotiate discounts with area businesses. Once they finalize a special, they email out and post the deal for people to take advantage of it. All we have to do is click the “Deal Me In” button on their website and enter our billing information. We’re then only billed once the minimum number of purchasers are met for the special. We then receive the coupon via email, and we’re good to go.

So obviously, the more people who subscribe to the email list, the better the odds we’ll see better specials. And of course the more money is donated to either Martha’s Table, Food and Friends or Fashion for Paws.

Meeting Erykah Mack, Finally

When Erykah was born this past Halloween, I was at war with viruses and germs, so the doctors highly advised I not see the preemie for risk of exposing her to these feisty bugs in my system. It took me long enough to fight them off, and one of the first things on my to do list was go meet Erykah Mack!

David Gaines finally meets Erykah Mack

Greetings From The Navajo Nation

I am David Gaines and I'm in Navajo NationThese are photos from a trip out to The Res [as in the Navajo reservation] during my visit to see my dad in Flagstaff, Arizona. Every time I’ve visited and attempted to explain to anyone what it’s like out on The Res, the words just never seem to do justice to the environment.

I can’t even say the photos will do it justice, but it does help give you an idea of what it’s like.

A few days later we took a trip south of Flagstaff to visit a couple of National Parks. Below are photos from our visit to Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Parks…

Wardman Row-House Neighborhoods

Sally Berk, a Washington preservationist, will give a guided tour of the exhibition she co-curated with Caroline Mesrobian Hickman, Celebrating a Century of Wardman Row-House Neighborhoods. This exhibit recounts the story of real-estate mogul Harry Wardman, who claimed in 1925 that he housed 10% of Washington’s population. The critical role he played, not only in the development of the Bloomingdale, Columbia Heights, and Brightwood — three row-house neighborhoods that were built along major streetcar lines in the early years of the 20th century — but in the constituent city as a whole, is told with historic photographs, maps, and advertisements; architectural floor plans and elevations; and the faces and voices of current residents. (The exhibit was sponsored by the DC Preservation League and funded in part by the Humanities Council of Washington, D.C.)

Meet at the entrance to the Kiplinger Library located on the second level of the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. (Suitable for all ages) No RSVP required. FREE

Author’s Talk: Abigail Adams by Woody Holton

Abigail AdamsAuthor’s talk – Abigail Adams by Woody Holton

Be the first to hear Woody Holton, associate professor of history and American studies at the University of Richmond, discuss and sign copies of his recent biography of Abigail Adams the day before it is published. The life story of the charismatic, politically engaged and financially savvy Adams-most often remembered through her letters-is an epic yet intimate narrative spanning seven decades from colonial Massachusetts, through the American Revolution, to presidential politics and retirement. She was the first First Lady to preside over the White House-completed in 1800 and then known as the President’s House. Using previously overlooked documents, Holton presents a vivid account of how Adams’ behind-the-scenes influence shaped critical events in the early history of the United States.

Holton’s Abigail Adams has been praised as a “bounty of fine-grained social history” and a “feast of language.” Walter Isaacson, author of Benjamin Franklin: An American Life, calls Abigail Adams “a must-read book for understanding the founding of our nation.”

Copies of the book will be on sale at the event provided by Politics & Prose of Washington, D.C.

DC Latin American Film Showcase

DC Latin Film ShowcaseFrom the DC Latin American Film Showcase:

“Tradition”, “Diversity” and “Renewal” might be the best terms one can use to describe the essence of more than thirty films presented in this Latin Film Showcase organized by the Ibero-American Cultural Attachés Association, which will be free and open to all in the Washington DC metropolitan area. This event showcases films from almost twenty countries, and in its diversity brings together contemporary classics such as La gente de la Universal (Colombia, 1993) and El hijo de la novia (Argentina, 2001), as well as new and surprising examples like La Nana (Chile, 2009) and Juventude (Brazil, 2008). Besides this wide variety of tendencies, documentaries from Spain and Latin American countries are also highlighted, such as El honor de las injurias (Spain, 2007) and the highly acclaimed Cocalero (Bolivia, 2007).

5k Kidney Walk

I want to send out a big THANK YOU to those who made donations to the National Kidney Foundation and sponsored me for the 5k walk last weekend. It was DC’s largest turnout ever, starting with only 30 participants when it first started 8 years ago to over 800 participants this year. Those making donations were:

My good friends representing Maryland — Pam Alston and Asabi Beal.

My homeboy, former housemate and fellow Aggie Kevin Walker representing The A.

The craziest manager I ever worked with, Desiree Albo, and favorite co-worker ever Araceli Figeuroa.

The fellas Devin Johnson, Maurice Hendrix and Mohamed Kakay who always got my back even when I don’t deserve it.

My favorite [and most patient] teacher of all time — Gail Wiggins of North Carolina A&T State University.

My fellow BlacKorean sistah in Denver — Marsha Nelson

The lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. — Cassie Quash, Dava Gray, Kathy Craft, Kiandra Lewis and most especially Betty Morrison who is the most generous person I know.

And of course, the one who helped introduce me to life and all its lessons — Dad.

Raising Expectations of Today’s Youth

And yet another one of my good friends, Abeo Anderson, is using her energy to make the world a better place. She sent me an email about some programs the non-profit where she works, Raising Expectations Inc., is having. One of the programs is “Green the Block” Mosaic & Music Citywide Youth Environmental Sculpture Art Project designed to clean up and design our neighborhoods. Youth [ages 12-18] will meet at neighborhood libraries to learn from environmental educators and professional mosaic/sculpture artists about various ways to help keep DC communities clean and green. Youth Ward representatives will take action by going out in their communities and collecting recyclable materials for the creation of 8 large mosaic/sculpture figures for public display in their Ward. More information can be found on their website.

37 Criminal Charges? You’re Hired!

Just as Washington DC’s City Council is piecing together a Code of Ethics in light of Mayor for Life Marion Barry’s most recent headliners [The City Paper has one of the most, well, memorable front pages of all time which is a MUST SEE], fellow councilmember Jim Graham finds himself indirectly associated with another scandal — this one with actual criminal charges. Allegedly his chief of staff took bribes to help push a bill that essentially is thought by some to limit competition with taxi companies and give financial breaks to those with hybrid vehicles. And coincidence or not, councilmember Jim Graham presented a bill that creates a medallion system [or something like that] which limits the number of taxis that can operate in DC as well as give financial breaks to those with hybrid vehicles [or something like that].

HELP! I Need Your Support for NKF 5K Walk

National Kidney Foundation WalkFor those who know and those who don’t, my mom had a kidney transplant several years ago after waiting for almost a decade and a half!!! Maybe longer!? I lost count when she didn’t get a match after the first three to five years. Three times a week she spent four hours sitting next to a machine to get her blood cleaned. That’s a part-time job! Talk about relying on your job to stay alive!

Well, the other day I saw a brochure about a fund-raising walk, similar to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Run/Walk, and, well, how am I not going to participate? I wear the green ribbon on my lapel from time to time which encourages people to become organ donors. My mom got her kidney from a 22-year-old who passed away way too early in life. He who was an organ donor. His other kidney went to another recipient. All his organs went to other recipients. Bless his heart.

Anyway, I know it’s a recession, but I’m asking everyone if they, too, can help, by making a donation to the National Kidney Foundation. Everything counts. Especially the gesture. If all you have is $10, my appreciation will be just as great. Donations can be made by clicking on this link to help me reach my goal.

I’m also going to participate in the 5k Walk on October 3, 2009, here in Washington, DC. I’m just glad it’s called a walk!

My Life According To Prince

Here we go again. Another one of those Facebook survey questionnaires asking random and useless questions and people reading them who have nothing better to do. Of course I normally ignore these, but then my homeboy Daz tags me on one which is quite interesting:

Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions. Pass it on to 15 people you like and include me. You can’t use the band/artist I used. (Sorry Dave and 2-3) Try not to repeat a song title. It’s a lot harder than you think! Repost as “my life according to (band name)”

You’re not supposed to use the same artist/band that the person who tagged you used, but Prince has so many songs that if a dozen people chose him, there would be plenty of songs to go around. Either-or, since I have nothing better to do right now, here goes…

“Rise Above” and Drink to this Recession!

Rise Above — Recession happy HourEvery time I turn around, there’s Marita Gumbs working on something new, something different and something that she wants me to help put the word about. Some I skip [don't tell her but the spa thing just wasn't something I was feelin'] but her current event, well, I think she got it right. Not only is this the ideal time for networking, developing connections and seeing who knows what about where, when and why; but who doesn’t need a strong drink during these times!?

“Rise Above — Recession Happy Hour” is for everyone who is looking for work, looking for workers, looking to network, share business ideas, has a business, is working on a business, is an entrepreneur, wants to meet entrepreneurs, is in network marketing [just stay away from me], wants to run for office and wants to get your name out, and wants to run out of the office screaming “I HATE MY JOB!

Last night Marita was finalizing her five themed-drinks for those who are looking for that sophisticated drink you haven’t had yet [I'm simple — Jack with a splash of Coke]. The event is on the top floor of Indulj at 1208 U Street NW across from Ben’s Chili Bowl. From 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Friday, July 24 we’ll be toasting to anything that comes to mind after a few drinks, so come join us, especially if it’s been a minute since I’ve seen you.

Mr. Gaines Goes to Washington

My dad’s in town with some time to spare, so we took a trip to the U.S. Capitol Building and the White House. Well, we also visited some other popular tourist spots, but these are the only pictures we took…
