Looking for Work? Try DC or Des Moines

U.S. Capitol Building

If you’re part of the 8.3 percent of the unemployed, you might want to restart your job search in either Washington, DC, or Des Moines, IA.

Looking for a good, high-paying job? Over the next four years, the Washington, D.C. area is expected to add more than a quarter of a million of them, putting it at the top of this year’s Forbes list of the Best Cities for Jobs.

Washington’s performance shouldn’t be much of a surprise, since the steadily increasing power of the federal government has long drawn defense contractors, lawyers and lobbyists to the nation’s capital. Now that Obamacare has put another 17% of the U.S. economy under the firm control of federal bureaucrats, expect a new wave of moving vans bringing highly-paid healthcare executives to Washington’s expensive suburbs. With a median household income of $88,600, Washington ranks only behind the San Jose, Calif. area when it comes to salaries.

Number Two on our list might be a little more surprising: Des Moines, Iowa. Relatively high household incomes and a low unemployment rate mean this capital city five-and-a-half hours west of Chicago is primed to add good jobs that newcomers can fill. Moody’s Analytics, which compiled all the projections for this survey, estimates Des Moines-area employment will increase by 8.6% or 36,000 jobs to 461,000 by the end of 2016. Unemployment topped out at 6% in the depths of the recession and stands a little below that now, compared with 8.3% nationwide.

HIRING: Java Developers [Direct Hire] in DC

If you are, know of, come across or just want to help me find a Java Developer:

Job Description

Our direct client in the Washington, DC, metro area is searching for a strong, results-oriented Java Developer with hands-on experience analyzing, developing and maintaining large scale, mission critical applications in a multi-platform J2EE and web systems environment. This position requires the astute ability to communicate and interact effectively with end-users, other developers, members of the performance testing team, and technical and non-technical management teams.

Why This Client?

If You Ever Thought About Being a Recruiter…

Ever since I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a newspaper reporter. Once I got into journalism in high school, I upgraded my career goal to becoming an editor in chief. Editor in chief of the Washington Post would’ve been the ideal position.

When I got to college, I started researching the profession more in-depth and comparing salaries of different professions. Somewhere along the way, it was brought to my attention the reporters were working longer hours, later hours and driving less expensive cars than the people in the advertisement department. And the advertisement department was larger for a reason. It was what really drove the newspaper. Those people were the important people.

Sales didn’t immediately become a profession of choice for me, but like most people in sales, I accidentally got into it. First selling cameras and photofinishing for Wolf Camera, moving into management, then going into management with Radio Shack after Wolf Camera imploded, then a handful of other sales jobs until I ended up at a staffing agency looking for temp work while my mom was recovery from her kidney transplant.

In an effort to make it easier for job seekers to know about job openings that I’m recruiting for, I’ve set up a specific email subscription list of nothing but job openings. Whenever a job opening is posted, you’ll receive an email with the blog posting and a link to the site where you’ll find more information about the job.

These job openings are [well, 98 percent of the time] jobs that I’m personally working on. They are not all the jobs hiring in Washington, DC; nor are they every single job that I’m recruiting for. Subscribing to this list in no way increases your odds of getting a job. It is simply a service to ensure you know about job openings. The only way to increase the odds of getting a job is by being the most qualified candidate, but I’m not going to beat that dead horse.

Yes, the emails you receive will only contain blog postings specifically about job openings.

Please note that other blog postings with job seeking advice or employment news is commingled with the I am David Gaines subscription list along with whatever else is on my mind — including posts and photos of my baby girl Najwa. Job openings are in that mailing list as well.

Once you’ve entered your email address, well, you know the drill. You’ll receive an email to activate the subscription and you’re good to go. Of course you can unsubscribe anytime you want with one click. And if someone offered me money for my subscription list, I’d sell it to them. Just kidding — the odds of receiving such an offer are never anyway. You’re email address will never be shared with anyone. Ever.

This is something that I [as in David Gaines] am doing personally and has absolutely nothing to do with my employer. Do NOT get this confused with anything that has anything to do with my job.

Do share this with your people who are looking for work. Just make sure they know that I’m not a lawyer, but I hope my points [and intentions] are clear. If you have any doubts, please decline to subscribe and good luck with your job search.
