Light Painting at DC Library With FutureMakers

When I first saw the event, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Light painting? Since we had nothing else planned for a lazy Sunday afternoon, we made a trip to the DC Library in Eastern Market to check it out.

And we were pleasantly surprised. I could tell it was kids waving around something with a lit something on the end to take a time elapsed photo to get the light streaks, but the genius was the learning part. The event was led by an organization called FutureMakers. Their goal in life is to create learning experiences for kids, let them do fun activities while learning new stuff. Mr. Sean and Ms. Jillian were great with the kids, interactive, educational, and simply fun for the kids. I was impressed.

First the kids learned about the different items they were going to use. What’s an LED? What do the letters stand for? What does emitting mean? Why are they called diodes? Why is one stem longer than the other? And for the battery, which is the positive side and negative side? What happens when you touch the stems of the LEDs to the battery? What does time-elapsed mean? And so on.

Then the kids grabbed some arts and crafty items and made their “light brushes.” And after some instruction, they were painting with light.

I almost changed my mind because it was a dreary day, but it had been a while since we went to the Eastern Market area so why not.

Mr. Sean and Ms. Jillian of FutureMakers were amazing activity leaders.
