The Skins: From Local to Home Team

I’m always asked what brought me to Washington, DC. Especially after the terrorist attacks, DC isn’t one of those places people rate highly as a place to live. Either the government brought you here, you were born here, or you are a die-hard Redskins fan like me.

When I was younger and living in Fayetteville, NC, we had a TV station broadcasting out of our nation’s capital. I didn’t realize why the “local” news always reported about events in DC. I figured because it was DC. WTTG, a Fox affiliate, also was home to the Redskins games. Every Sunday the Redskins were playing, they were on television.

While the rest of the country watched the game of the week or their local team, this “local” station was playing their local team which was being watched as far south as my living room.

Ahhh, the glory years. Every Sunday I’d race home from Berean Baptist Church to watch the Diesel and Go-Go Joe Theismann, the Smurfs, the Fun Bunch, Capital Punishment, Bam Bam Alvin Walton, The Posse and especially The Hogs. Art Monk, Dave Butz and Darrell Green were classy guys who I looked up to. My favorite? Doug Williams.

I vaguely remember Doug Williams playing as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer and I believe a Tampa Bay Bandit in the USFL. My dad always talked about the great black quarterback who was good enough to win a Super Bowl. The great quarterback representing an HBCU.

But the epitome of a Redskins is the man who was responsible for the three Vince Lombardi trophies sitting in the nation’s capital. Joe Gibbs brought home the hardwood with three different QBs. Could Jimmy Johnson do that without Troy Aikman? What about Belicheck without Brady? [I know, I’m pushing it…]

Now that I’m here where I always felt like was my “local” home, I can get all the news about the Redskins on a daily basis. Live in North Carolina today and you’re bothered by Panthers news. In Atlanta it’s all about Ron Mexico, aka Mike Vick, and the Falcons. Here at home, it’s about the one team that has always been my home team — the Washington Redskins.
